the best thing is let it wash over you as you read; if you try & understand every sentence then you're in for trouble. it's the cumulative, impressionistic effect that's at the heart of faulkner. like a waking dream; a special southern grotesquerie. and often, it doesn't all come together until the very end. he can be a tough slog, but when you finish you feel like you've just had a great workout. lots to ponder afterwards.
