Music:"A Cloud To The Back"--Sam Prekop

For some reason, for me summertime means the reading of a William Faulkner book. I've done this every summer for the past several years. Andy thinks I'm insane. Nonetheless. This morning on the way to work I started "Sanctuary," supposedly more accessible (and very sordid).

I was thinking that David Gordon Green would be the perfect director to take a crack at making a film adaptation of Faulkner. If you've seen his first film, "George Washington," then you know what I'm talking about.

the best thing is let it wash over you as you read; if you try & understand every sentence then you're in for trouble. it's the cumulative, impressionistic effect that's at the heart of faulkner. like a waking dream; a special southern grotesquerie. and often, it doesn't all come together until the very end. he can be a tough slog, but when you finish you feel like you've just had a great workout. lots to ponder afterwards.
